Many years ago I spent four months in the “Alfred Hospital ” in
Melbourne recovering from a hit and run bicycle accident. My right leg had
been very badly damaged, fortunately for me, their excellent Medical Team were
able to repair the damage to my ankle and my femur so that I could be mobile
again. During this time I can remember suffering the pain, humiliation and
frustrations of trying to propel myself around in a normal “Wheelchair
”.
Some of you who have been, or are at present,
in that situation know exactly what it ’s like.
The mind does strange things when the body is
lacking it ’s full capabilities and I am sure that the seed was created
that one day I would invent a solution and make the ‘wheelchair’ easier
to use.
Two years ago this seed popped back up in my
mind so strongly that it made me realise that by combining my bicycle knowledge
with the accepted basic wheelchair design I could create a wheelchair that could
be pedalled by ‘hand ’and be a lot easier to use. Assisted by a few very
knowledgeable friends I have designed and produced the “SHELLI”
Hand Pedal Wheelchair for your enjoyment.
My ' Shelli ' is now Professionally manufactured by a local
Fully Licensed Engineering Firm to conform with Specifications as per
Australian Standards AS3695-1992.
